Christoph completed a 12-month internship at our branch in Reading. Here you can read what he experienced during his stay in the US.

1. Why did you decide to do an internship at FMS in Reading?

It was already clear to me during my studies that I wanted to gain experience in living and working abroad. After completing my bachelor's degree in business administration in the summer of 2017, I was looking for an international challenge. A friend of mine recommended the internship at FMS in Reading, because he did the same internship a year before. Because of the module production and logistics during my studies, I had a good theoretical background, which I wanted to put into practice. Retrospective, the year in the US was a very good decision. Now I can speak English fluently and I have gained a lot of working experience in the export and import departments at FMS Reading. In addition, I got to know the American culture, other American cities and I made new friends. This helped me to expand my global network.

2. What fascinates you about working in a freight forwarding company?

Due to global changes in politics and the economy, a freight forwarder always has to be prepared for new challenges. I find it very interesting to find the best possible solution for the customer.

3. What were your daily tasks?

During my time in the US, I have worked in different export and import departments. I have supported my team leaders and their customers. Each customer has different processes - that is what makes working as a freight forwarder so exciting. It was never boring and I have learned a lot in the past 12 month.

4. What was your personal highlight?

I really liked that I was not only allowed to work at the office in Reading but also at the FMS office in Houston. In addition, I used my time for a trip to Hawaii (Mau, Kaua'i and Ohau). These were my personal highlights.

5. With which three words would you describe the working atmosphere at FMS?

Down-to-earth - Friendly - Courteous

6. After your first days at FMS in Germany - what was the most difference to the work in the US?

As I support the IT Business Alignment Manager for the Central Europe region, my new tasks are project-related. In the US, I was responsible for export and import shipments. Because of the different tasks & responsibilities it is hard to say. In addition, there is also a difference in the way of living as Hamburg is a much bigger city compared to Reading.

7. What tips do you give future applicants for an internship?

It is always an advantage to find out about the values and history of the company you want to apply for. It is also helpful, if you are aware of your own strengths and weaknesses and think about where you would like to see yourself in five years.
