Personal Report | Bone Marrow Transplation

Approximately 70% of all patients in need of bone marrow transplants find a matching donor outside of their family. We at FMS are very proud, that one of our colleagues is one of those donors. He shares his story to let others know what the process is like and how easy it is to become a donor.

One year ago, we had a bone marrow donor drive at the FMS headquarters in Hamburg. Our colleague Oliver took part and joined the register. He says: "Joining the register is simple: Fill out a form and swab your mouth with a cotton swab. You don't need to do anything else, apart from waiting for the call."
One year later, he received that call from the DKMS (https://www.dkms.de/en) and was informed that he is a match. The next steps were doing some more blood tests and making sure that he was healthy and a viable candidate for donation. Every step was organized very well by the DKMS and all information needed was provided.

In the five before the actual to the donation Oliver received shots of a synthetic protein to boost the stem cell counts. The injections made the body work at an accelerated rate, which can lead to possible side effects (e.g. bone pain, fatigue). "I just continued to think about what the recipient was going through, and it quickly put my aches and pains in a different perspective." says Oliver. "The donation itself wasn't painful at all and the 5-hour collection went by fast. I had one needle in each arm, one pulling the blood out and one putting it back in."

Nadine Kinscher-Masur, who organized the bone marrow donor drive at FMS: "This is such a small thing, but when you think of how huge it is in the way it affects someone else's life - it's massive."

So, request a swab kit free of charge to become a potential blood stem cell donor today https://www.dkms.de/en/become-a-donor or even host a donation event in your company.
