Locomotives from Germany to Indonesia

Case Study about the loading of locomotives from Germany to Asia.

Large and heavy - not a problem for Fr. Meyer's Sohn and its capable partners such as OVERSEAS Logistic Services GmbH.

A proud 8.41 meters long, 3.54 meters wide, 4.45 meters high and almost 45 tonnes in weight - those were the dimensions of each of two locomotives awaiting shipment to Asia.

The locomotives were too heavy and too bulky to load into containers. The conventional solution would have been to load them as breakbulk or RoRo, if it were not for the tight time frame which had to be upheld, and the lack of departures for breakbulk and RoRo.

So the only way to do it was to load them as breakbulk onto a container ship to benefit from the attractive transit time of a normal container vessel with its weekly departures, and to find a logistical solution for the customer.

The locomotives were carried by barge, taking potential low water into consideration, from inside Germany to the western ports and on to Antwerp, where they boarded a container ship and sailed to Indonesia in around 40 days.
