News | Changes to Dutch and Belgian truck toll systems as of July 1st, 2026

July 1st, 2026

As of July 1st, 2026, legal changes to road usage charges for heavy goods vehicles will come into effect in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In the Netherlands, a distance-based truck toll will be introduced for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons. The toll will be calculated, among other factors, based on the vehicle weight, emission and CO₂ class, as well as the use of toll roads. This new system replaces the previous regime and is intended to ensure a more user-based financing and management of road infrastructure.

At the same time, Belgium will adjust its existing distance-based toll tariffs. The charges will continue to depend on the region (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels), the vehicle weight and the emission class. With these new tariffs, Belgium is responding to infrastructural and environmental policy requirements and aligning its system with current conditions in European road freight transport.

These government-driven measures will result in higher infrastructure costs on transport routes involving the Netherlands and Belgium. The additional charges arise solely from national legislation and are levied as toll costs; they reflect current regulatory developments in European road freight transport. The specific impact on individual transports depends in particular on the respective route, the share of toll roads used, the vehicles employed and the applicable national tariffs.
